Discover the darbuka and its rhythm of cultures

The darbuka is a goblet-shaped hand drum with roots in the Middle East, North Africa, and Eastern Europe. Its crisp tones and deep bass make it a versatile instrument used in traditional, folk, and modern fusion music styles, from Egyptian and Turkish classics to contemporary world music.

With its dynamic sound and expressive range, the darbuka has played a central role in both celebrations and storytelling through rhythm for centuries. Also known as doumbek or tabla (not to be confused with the Indian tabla), the darbuka comes in various regional styles and spellings, such as darbouka or darboukah.

What you’ll learn

In this workshop you’ll get to know the darbuka and learn how to hold and play it, practice essential strokes and hand techniques, and explore one or two traditional rhythms like the Maqsoum, Malfuf or others.

This beginner-friendly session is open to both newcomers and returning participants. The workshop host will tailor instructions to your level, so you can continue building skills and confidence in playing rhythms.

For whom

• Adults with little to no experience in playing rhythms on the darbuka
• A maximum of 4 persons

• Use of a darbuka during the lesson
