Over Joelle Charan

Joelle Charan is een hedendaagse pianist, jazz-zangeres en songwriter, die moderne popmuziek combineert met traditionele Indiase instrumentatie. Ze is geboren en getogen in Amsterdam en heeft een katholieke moeder en een hindoeïstische vader. Ze wordt gesterkt door haar gemengde afkomst en religieuze overtuigingen. Joelle betovert haar luisteraars met beschrijvende teksten die verhalen vertellen die zijn geïnspireerd door haar Indiase grootouders, de ontberingen van haar familie en de avonturen van haar reizen.

Het vroege werk van Joelle is muzikaal geïnspireerd door onder meer Laura Mvula en Norah Jones. Het is doordrenkt met klassieke Indiase elementen voor een geluid dat zowel meeslepend is als vol verrassingen. Joelle heeft internationale steun gekregen van de media, van Groot-Brittannië tot Indonesië en Brazilië.

Na haar afstuderen in jazz-zang en -piano aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam verhuisde Joelle naar New York om haar kennis van songwriting te verdiepen. Ze studeerde aan The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Manhattan met genereuze beurzen van het prestigieuze Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds en het conservatorium zelf. Joelle vond inspiratie in alle uithoeken van de stad en keerde terug van haar jaar in New York met een koffer vol mooie liedjes.

Haar nieuwste single Forgive Me en komende album zijn geschreven en gearrangeerd door Joelle Charan en gecoproduceerd met de Britse producer John Reynolds, bekend van zijn werk met onder andere U2, Brian Eno, Damien Rice en Sinéad O’Connor.

Joelle haar eerste twee optredens in Groot-Brittannië in 2022 en 2023 waren uitverkocht. Andere hoogtepunten zijn zingen in Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam voor Festival De Uitmarkt, Koninklijk Theater Carré en Paradiso Amsterdam.

Joelle Charan bracht in 2022 haar single ‘Stained Glass’ uit, een combinatie van moderne popmuziek met orkestrale strijkers en Indiase instrumenten. Door middel van filmische harmonieën straalt de track sprookjesachtige beelden uit.

About Joelle Charan

Joelle Charan is a contemporary pianist, jazz singer and songwriter, who combines modern pop music with traditional Indian instrumentation. She was born and raised in Amsterdam and has a Catholic mother and a Hindu father. She is strengthened by her mixed heritage and religious beliefs. Joelle captivates her listeners with descriptive lyrics that tell stories inspired by her Indian grandparents, the hardships of her family and the adventures of her travels.

Joelle's early work was musically inspired by Laura Mvula and Norah Jones, among others. It is infused with classical Indian elements for a sound that is both compelling and full of surprises. Joelle has received international media support from Britain to Indonesia and Brazil.

After graduating in jazz singing and piano from the Amsterdam Conservatory, Joelle moved to New York to deepen her knowledge of songwriting. She studied at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Manhattan with generous scholarships from the prestigious Prince Bernhard Cultural Fund and the conservatory itself. Joelle found inspiration in all corners of the city and returned from her year in New York with a suitcase full of beautiful songs.

Her latest single Forgive Me and upcoming album were written and arranged by Joelle Charan and co-produced with British producer John Reynolds, known for his work with U2, Brian Eno, Damien Rice and Sinéad O'Connor.

Joelle's first two performances in Great Britain in 2022 and 2023 were sold out. Other highlights include singing in Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam for Festival De Uitmarkt, Royal Theater Carré and Paradiso Amsterdam.
