African Spirituality and the forgotten role of East African Dance (pagina in Nederlands)

In this talk, dancer and anthopologist John Kayongo goes back to the role of dance in celebrating African spirituality before colonialisation.

His research in East and Central African villages was inspired by the publication “Spirit Mediumship and Society in Africa” by John Beattie and John Middleton.

Next to this exclusive presentation, John will host three workshops wit East African dance, one for kids, one for kids + parents, and one for adults

We are easy to reach in Amsterdam, 5 minutes from Central Station, bus stop in front of the door. Especially for the autumn holidays, Station West also organizes workshops for kids, family, and adults.

John Kayongo: anthropologist and dance teacher

Born and raised in Nairobi (Kenya) with Ugandan roots, John Kayongo was a successful dancer from an early age.

After studying Anthropology, he had the unique opportunity to come to the Netherlands to study Modern Dance at the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam.

He has been enthusiastically teaching African dance for many years now and is known for his drive and willpower to let others share his energy. The stories about African rituals accompanying the dances give the dance lessons an extra dimension.
